“PERSEVERANCE”
The Sounds of eM’s debut independent release entitled, “PERSEVERANCE,” has been described by himself as “Jazzy-Sexy-Soul,” for all the Grown & Sexy folk. It’s a musical mixture of smooth yet hard hitting at the same time still very sexy for all the grown folk. Vocally soothing and very relaxing in which he says it’s music to drive to. This album incorporates nuances of jazz, abstract hip hop infused with a lot of soul without compromise.
eM has always been self-sufficient from a production standpoint. Being a recording engineer, who’s very proficient in sound design and studio operations. Not only did he mix and master this project he also designed all the artwork, web site and and shot the photography and video as well.
“I am truly a man whom wears many hats and is determined to create nothing less than stellar work.” On “I Like The Way U Do” he re-creates the classic Ramp sample also used by a Tribe Called Quest. To create a smooth flirtatious sound that also showcases eM’s use of the his talkbox mastery made famous by the late great Roger Troutman. “Piercings & Tattoos” has a very sexy live feel to it. On this song eM is singing to a women while letting her know “if you show me yours, I’ll show you mine”. Great musicianship on this piece also featuring a very smooth flute solo played by upcoming sax and flute player Ryan Whitehead. Who also plays tenor sax on the throwback “Watchin’ Ladies” and the ultra sexy “Fantasy” piece.
Very colorful in his choice of sounds that truly define his artistry. On songs like “Whatz New” eM’s smooth vocal really entices the soul. One would imagine that this song hits close to home. “Stars In Your Eyes” is a cover of one of my favorite Herbie Hancock songs that featured vocals. eM really brings out his full voice on this one. His arrangement features a great jazz solo by
guitarist Quenton Rubin. Who is also featured on rhythm guitar on tracks “What About Them” and “I Luv Your Laugh”, which are very well put together and cleverly thought out. The songs “Ena Thoughts”, “Thoughts” and “Outta Thoughts” make up the the intro, plot and climax of the album and are very reminiscent to the late great Marvin Gaye from his “What’s Goin On” album.
Vocally on “Wordless” eM scats his way through this very smooth groove which most definitely shows his jazz vocal ability and synth solo improvising. “Hey Young World” displays his hip hop background, centered around a sampled element, with a infectious nod your head beat at the same time bringing a very jazzy feel vocally. The arrangement of the classic Earth Wind & Fire track
“That’s The Way Of The World” in which eM utilizes his vocals to recreate a new take on the chorus by singing a vocal harmony to the original melody played by the EWF horn section on this classic entitled “Let It Shine”. “Ain’t No 1/2 Steppin” brings a very neo soul feel that feels so good. On a personal note, we pay homage to a talented sax player, Eric “E-Man” Armstrong who played an incredible alto sax solo for this song, who touched not only our lives but our music as well as blessing us with his musicianship on this project, before passing from a battle of cancer.
PERSEVERANCE is genius in disguise, and to have made it this far in the music business over the last 30 years is a true testimony of my love and passion for music. “Music is my art!”
